Sun Safety

We all love to get out into the sun, and our children do even more. In fact, they get most of their lifetime's exposure to the sun before they reach the age of 20. The UV-Buddy team have been out on the road at various events and its been a real eye opener. We were really surprised by the number of parents who didn't believe that UV Exposure was an issue for them or their families. However, when we explained how damaging UV radiation is it gave them food for thought.

In case you don't know about UV-Radiation, here is a quick summary:

  • UVA rays can cause aging and wrinkling of your skin wrinkling and contribute to more serious skin conditions and skin cancer, such as melanoma. UVA rays pass easily through the ozone layer (the protective layer of atmosphere) and they make up the majority of our sun exposure.
  • UVB radiation is also dangerous and can cause sunburns and cataracts. Melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer is believed to be associated with severe UVB sunburns that occur before the age of 20. Most UVB rays are absorbed by the ozone layer, but there are still enough of these rays present to cause serious damage.
  • UVC rays are the most dangerous, but fortunately these rays are blocked by the ozone layer and as such rarely reach the earth.

The most important thing to remember here is to ensure that your children are always protected from the dangers of the sun by either covering up or wearing a good sunblocker.
